About Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC)
Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has dedicated itself to developing the strength, health, confidence and leadership of Warlpiri youth since 1993. The program aims to promote positive and meaningful future pathways for all young Warlpiri people.
The notable, and sustainable, success of the program has been firmly based on the strength of Warlpiri youth, families and their communities, as well as the ongoing commitment of staff. The program was created by, and for, Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Warlpiri Committee.
The WYDAC head office is located in Yuendumu Community, however WYDAC is comprised of a variety of programs operating at five different Warlpiri sites – Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, Lajamanu and Mt Theo Outstation. WYDAC also have an office located in Alice Springs. There are over 70 staff across the entire organisation with more than half of these being Warlpiri people.

About the Opportunities
WYDAC now has multiple opportunities for full-time Youth Workers to join their community-based teams in Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi and Lajamanu, in remote NT.
Reporting to the relevant Youth Program Coordinator, this unique opportunity will see you facilitating a program of activities responsive to the needs of the youth in that community.
The activities provide daily opportunities for engagement with healthy and positive diversionary and development activities, which in turn prevents the youth in the communities from 'at-risk' activity. Youth development activities build the resilience, confidence and skills of young Warlpiri men and women in a culturally appropriate manner, to assist them to develop to their full potential.
More specifically, some of your key duties will include:
- Delivering a youth program with enthusiasm and dedication, with a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach to development and diversion;
- Engaging with, and building, strong relationships with young people, especially those who present with more complex or challenging behaviours;
- Supporting the expansion of development programs, including but not limited to activities relating to literacy and numeracy, sexual health education, healthy relationships, and informal training opportunities; and
- Actively supporting young people into employment, and to develop skills that will assist them to thrive as young leaders and members of their community.
The role requires individuals who are willing and able to work in a remote area and who understand, and are sensitive to, the unique requirements of working within an Indigenous community. It can be challenging at times, but the satisfaction is significant. About You
To be successful, you will have experience working with at-risk youth and a demonstrated understanding of, and experience working with cross-cultural persons and community development (ideally within a remote context). Additionally, experience in the development and management of recreational activities is required.
WYDAC is looking for individuals prepared to work in a hands-on manner with the program participants. You'll love getting outside and leading youth activities, and will have a passion for creating opportunities for young people in a remote location, using your resourcefulness and self-motivation on a regular basis.
As an excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills, you will have the ability to forge strong relationships with both the youth of the community as well as a range of internal and external stakeholders. In addition, your experience working with young people who have challenging behaviours and complex needs will provide you with the means to make confident decisions and manage stressful situations as they may arise.
Solid administrative skills will be a requirement, as will a degree of computer literacy, with proven knowledge of spreadsheets and databases.
A current ‘C’ Class Open Driver’s License, Working With Children Check (Ochre Card), and a Police Check (or willingness to obtain prior to employment) are all essential to being considered. Candidates with a Senior First Aid Certificate, as well as sport and/or creative skills, will be highly regarded, however, these are not essential requirements.
