About WYDAC 

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has dedicated itself to developing the strength, health, confidence and leadership of Warlpiri youth since 1993. Their program aims to promote positive and meaningful future pathways for all young Warlpiri people.

The notable, and sustainable, success of the program has been firmly based on the strength of Warlpiri youth, families and their communities, as well as the ongoing commitment of staff. The program was created by, and for, Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Warlpiri Committee.

The WYDAC head office is located in Yuendumu Community, however WYDAC is comprised of a variety of programs operating at five different Warlpiri sites – Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, Lajamanu and Mt Theo Outstation. WYDAC also have an office located in Alice Springs. There are over 70 staff across the entire organisation with more than half of these being Warlpiri people.

About the Opportunity

WYDAC is currently seeking a passionate Learning Centre Manager to join their team in remote NT. Although based in Yuendumu, you will oversee the Centre in this community and Lajamanu, so some travel will be required.

Reporting to the General Manager - Youth and Family Services , your primary responsibility will be to research, develop and manage the implementation and evaluation of a range of quality programs, courses and activities that respond to local needs in accordance with the aims and objectives of the Learning Centres.

The Learning Centres operate five days a week, and provide a mix of formal and informal, community-driven learning - primarily education sessions that provide information about important community issues. You will be responsible for managing the Learning Centre Coordinators, Officers, and any other staff or volunteers working in the Centres.

Some of your key responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Providing on-site support to remote Learning Centre Coordinators, mentoring them to build their own language, literacy, numeracy and teaching skills;
  • Researching, applying for, and managing funding contracts through the Northern Territory and Federal Governments for relevant educational programs;
  • Engaging with key stakeholders to identify learning needs and support local employment or training opportunities for Warlpiri people;
  • Managing budgets and identifying material or resource needs in the Learning Centre programs;
  • Actively seeking new opportunities to develop and implement formal and non-formal education and training programs; and
  • Reviewing activities to ensure the program delivers quality and compliant education for local referral agencies and communities.

About You

To be considered for these roles, you will hold a minimum Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, along with a relevant qualification in language, literacy, numeracy, education or similar.

WYDAC is looking for someone with a demonstrated understanding of, and experience in, working with cross-cultural persons in either community development or education, preferably in a remote context, and an understanding of adult learning and/or adult literacy.

With demonstrated leadership experience, you will be confident recruiting, mentoring and managing multidisciplinary teams of staff across both locations. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills, able to build relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders, and deliver complex information in plain english.

The ability to work in a team and demonstrate resourcefulness, self-motivation and independent decision making is essential. A resilient operator, you will have good negotiation, problem solving and stress management skills to deal effectively with the day to day duties.

You will have a proven history of effectively managing budgets and resources, developing funding submissions and writing project reports. Your strong computer skills, including the use of spreadsheets and databases, will be crucial.

Most importantly, WYDAC are looking for passionate individuals with a broad and flexible approach to engaging people in learning.

Although not essential, a current First Aid Certificate or 4 wheel driving experience will be highly regarded.

Please note: To be considered you must have a current ‘Class C’ Open Driver’s License, and be willing to undergo a criminal history check and Working with Children clearance (Ochre Card) prior to commencement.

About Yuendumu and Lajamanu, NT

Sitting on the edge of the Tanami Desert, 300 kilometres north west of Alice Springs, the remote community of Yuendumu is one of the largest Aboriginal communities in central Australia and has a thriving community of Aboriginal artists.

Yuendumu is a community largely made up of the Warlpiri and Anmatyerr Aboriginal people, with a population of approximately 817. For an isolated area, Yuendumu is surprisingly busy. With a strong arts centre, women's centre, its own media centre and a cutting edge youth program, Yuendumu is a community known for its energy and vitality.

Lajamanu has a slightly smaller population of around 800 people and located around 560 kilometres south-west of Katherine - and approximately 890 kilometres from Darwin, sitting on the edge of the Tanami Desert and the eastern side of Hooker Creek. 

Lajamanu is home to the Indigenous Warlpiri people. The Warlpiri have a long history of creating art on wooden artefacts, the ground, rocks, and their bodies. In the late 80's, the Warlpiri began incorporating canvas and acrylic paint to their artistic process following a traditional painting course held in the community.
