About Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC)

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has dedicated itself to developing the strength, health, confidence and leadership of Warlpiri youth since 1993. The program aims to promote positive and meaningful future pathways for all young Warlpiri people.

The notable, and sustainable, success of the program has been firmly based on the strength of Warlpiri youth, families and their communities, as well as the ongoing commitment of staff. The program was created by, and for, Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Warlpiri Committee.

The WYDAC head office is located in Yuendumu Community, however WYDAC is comprised of a variety of programs operating at five different Warlpiri sites – Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, Lajamanu and Mt Theo Outstation. WYDAC also have an office located in Alice Springs. There are over 70 staff across the entire organisation with more than half of these being Warlpiri people.

About the Opportunity

The Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) now has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time Youth Programs Coordinator to manage their Youth Program staff and the Jaru Pirrjirdi Youth Team.

Reporting to the General Manager, your primary role will be to coordinate the Jaru Pirrjirdi Youth Leadership and Development Program and to work closely with youth at-risk in the community. 

This will be achieved by:

  • Coordinating a program of culturally appropriate activities, 6 days a week, as well as providing educational/training pathways and projects;

  • Ensuring any resources or infrastructure needed to provide quality Youth and Jaru Pirrjirdi Programs is provided;
  • Developing close relationships and engaging with “at risk” young people and encourage their participation in youth/Jaru activities;
  • Forming and maintaining relationships or partnerships with both local and external organisations to increase education, training, health, cultural and career opportunities for young people;
  • Providing regular reports on the Youth Program and Jaru Pirrjirdi to WYDAC Management and relevant funding bodies; and
  • Supporting staff, developing rosters and timetables, and assisting with recruitment and induction

Although based at Yuendumu, you will be coordinating youth programs across 3 different communities - Yuendumu, Willowra and Nyirripi. All activities have an overall objective to strengthen young people to resist substance abuse and anti-social behaviour and provide opportunities for their personal and professional development.

About You

WYDAC is looking for candidates with experience working with cross-cultural persons and a demonstrated understanding of youth-at-risk and remote community issues. Ideally, you will hold a qualification in Project Management or a relevant area, however this is not essential.

You will have excellent communication skills, the demonstrated ability to work in a team with resourcefulness, self-motivation and independent decision-making capabilities. A resilient operator, you will have good negotiation skills and be calm under pressure.

Demonstrated skills in project management and human resources will be crucial, as will strong computer skills and experience working with spreadsheets and databases.

The role would best suit someone who is passionate about youth work and remote-area assistance, who would fully appreciate an opportunity to embrace another culture and learn while they teach! 

Please note: To be considered you must have a current ‘Class C’ Open Driver’s License, and be willing to undergo a criminal history check and Working with Children clearance (Ochre Card) prior to commencement.
